What is an index?

An index tracks the performance of a defined group of securities using a weighting methodology. It is a benchmark, not a directly owned asset. Products linked to an index can have different terms, fees and risk characteristics.

Concentration and correlation

Broad indices can still be concentrated in a small number of large companies or sectors. Correlations can rise during stress, reducing the diversification benefit you might expect.
